2023 BRING IT ON – by Russell Mackintosh (Long Distance Co-ordinator)

After a strange 2022, where races were in unfamiliar places on the calendar, and many runners found it difficult to plan their racing year coming off a global pandemic, the good news is that 2023 has a more traditional feel to it.

From speaking to FHAC runners, there already seems to be a renewed enthusiasm to enter races such as Two Oceans and Comrades Ultras next year, and I foresee far larger contingents from FHAC participating in these marquee ultra-marathon events.

We will be putting together a program to assist our runners with their preparations for these events, including our Smitswinkel 50km run prior to Two Oceans, and the 4 Hills 4 Lindsay training run that precedes Comrades. I will also liaise with our Club Captain, Adrian Hayes, with regards to Saturday Club Runs, so that we can build up the training distances as we approach Comrades and Two Oceans.

In addition, we will also assist our runners with information evenings, where relevant topics will be discussed, and where we will have guest speakers to share their knowledge and experiences with us.

Also look out for old favourites like Bell’s Tuesday and the Comrades Ra-Ra Show. Dates will be communicated via our social media platforms as soon as they have been finalized.

I am excited at the prospect of what the New Year holds for our distance runners, as there is nothing quite like the camaraderie that is built by a group training together for a common goal. Bring it on!
