LANDMARKS: heading for a permanent number by Neville Frieslich

This was the 21st anniversary of this favourite half marathon of mine.

My aim:

-To complete my 8th run to take me closer to my only chance of ever achieving a race permanent number (one of the few races where you can get one)

-To run under 2hours and podium maybe

-To get to the finish before the younger (much younger) fleet footed club members depleted the cooler box

Love the route of this half marathon. Fast and flat first 7km then onwards and upwards (193m elevation in total) for about 3km until you reach UCT, then mostly downhill and flat to the finish. Do the uphill section at a slow and steady pace then good times are achievable.

All very scenic and varied through leafy suburbs, alongside canals, lovely path along M3 , mountain views and what other race takes you underground 3 time through subways and up above ground on that slightly rickety bridge over the freeway making you feel like you’ve reached the dizzy heights.

As the name implies this race takes you past 25 plus landmarks/heritage sites such as Red Cross hospital, Mosterts mill, RBHS, the common WP rugby and cricket grounds, SA breweries (with its unmistakeable aroma), Josephine mill to name but a few.

The start and finish venue is one of the best with WPCC large club facilities, neatly cut lawns and mountain views.  Was great place to celebrate completing the race with the other 24 club members present on the day.

The race organization was great as usual with the prize giving starting on time. That does not often happen.

Only disappointment was the medal which did not have a landmark or a date as in previous years.

Last few kilometres were tough as had not run this distance for a while, but mission was accomplished in all respects.  So was a happy guy at the end with something cool in my hand.

Looking forward to the next one.  Definitely a must do for those who have not.
