RACE REPORT: Peninsula Marathon – PB and TOM Qualifier by Paul Kearns
After a year of one injury after another, I eventually managed to run in FHAC colours for the first time in a long-long time.
The Cape Peninsula is an unbelievably stunning race that runs through our very own neck of the woods.
This run was extra special as it was my only chance to get the TOM qualifier time. I planned to follow the 4:50 bus of the legendary Mr ‘O’.
All was going well, however just before the halfway point I decided the group was too big for me to follow (with my accident-prone record) as I could neither see the road nor any obstacles in front of me. I had recently run the last 22km of the same route from Diep River to the finish line and had an idea of what pace I could run from there.
I decided to run at a similar pace to that training run, however felt the mileage at Glencairn.
My family turned up at Dixie’s giving me the final motivation I needed to get to the finish line and smashing my PB by 32 minutes in a qualifying time of 4:17.
Big thanks to Patrick and his two oceans training plan, Adrian’s Tuesday night training (wors club) as well as the FHAC committee and all members for making our club so special.
